do with it. eric rasmussen has the story. >> reporter: oakland police have devoted no special resources to the so called 100 blocks that are said to be responsible for more than 90% of oakland's shootings and homicides and the exact location of those blocks is still a mystery. in this rough part of west oakland, tim muni says his family has seen more crime and less police. >> they're stepping their game up. >> reporter: but chalking it up to oakland's new 100 blocks plan may not be the reason. >> 100 blocks is for a term that opk -- opd has been doing for a long time. >> reporter: chief howard jordan saids his department has always concentrated on crime hot spots but is not concentrating on the 100 most

favorable view of president obama. while 34% have a favorable view of romney. the first lady is said to visit the bay area for a special coast guard ceremony. president obama's health care overhaul is now in the hands of the supreme court. the justices are expected to cast their vote on the lawn tomorrow after three days of historic hearings in washington, d.c. no one else will be present during tomorrow's secret vote. at stake is whether the 2010 health care law is constitutional. there is a major new development tonight in the search for missing south bay teenager sierra lamar. as robert handa reports, late today volunteer searchers made a discovery that is now being treated as possible evidence in

the case. >> reporter: santa clara sheriff's deputies searched morgan hill after a strange discovery by volunteers. the volunteers are part of a search looking for sierra lamar. >> the volunteers located a stainless steel box. a couple of used condoms. it'll be submitted to the crime lab for further analysis. >> reporter: the area was searched at least five times since her possible abduction, a near by homeowner was shaken. >> it is disturbing, something very close to home. i hope it is connected but then i hope it's not connected and maybe give them some evidence or something to find her. >> reporter: the discovery capped a day of ups and downs. today the search of water ways did not yield any clues. but search organizers were encouraged by a huge turn out

of more than 100 volunteers, then got an unexpected donation. >> we have collected and we are giving to class kids to find sierra $12,000. >> nothing like this has happened to us in any previous search. the response is absolutely extraordinary on every level. >> reporter: class also says the donations and volunteer turn outs could help stretch out the search which is scheduled to continue through sunday. in morgan hill, robert handa, ktvu news. a candlelight vigil took place in fremont tonight for sierra lamar. about 200 students from the confirmation class at holy spirit church lit candles and prayed. many of the students go to washington high school which is where sierra went to school before moveing to the south bay. one of her close friends thanks the crowd for their support. >> i want all you guys to keep praying for her and keep looking, keep hope. don't give up.

>> another volunteer search for sierra is set for tomorrow morning in morgan hill. new information tonight on that shooting we told you about last night outside of chevy's restaurant in richmond. agents with the bureau of tobacco and firearms and explosives shot a man. denard hutchinson was trying to sell a grenade launcher but pulled a gun. he is expected to survive. two other men were arrested. officials now say a grenade launcher was not found at the scene. we also know now the name of the man killed in a drive by shooting in richmond which we reported on last month. the victim has been identified as bonnie ray morris. it was an intentional shooting but investigators say they don't know whether morris was the intended target. the defense department

announced the death of a fighter pilot. francis inlay of vacaville died of injuries from an accident involving an f15 aircraft. the military would only say it happened sunday near a base in southwest asian. captain inlay was supporting operation enduring freedom in afghanistan. a united flight bound for san francisco international stopped in philadelphia. what was found in the backpack. picking up a little bit of green out there right now. i'll let you know when rain returns. a san francisco family was attacked and killed. tonight friends honor them according to chinese custom.

this video of a homicide scene in berkeley came into the newsroom just about an hour ago. a man was shot near sacramento street. witnesses reporting hearing several gunshots, as you can see there are several evidence markers, we counted at least 19 of them on the grown. there they are there. there's no word on a motive and no arrests have been made. the victim's name has not been released. new at 10:00 tonight, pg & e is backing off from a plan to destroy thousands of trees growing under a high voltage line. debra villalon is live where angry residents made the difference tonight. >> reporter: this household just one of them. along this property run powerful transmission lines, the trees below and alongside are targeted. >> they all have blue dots on them. >> reporter: blue dots on trees, a red flag for pg & e

the suspects are all described as latino in their mid-20s. they may have been driving an old ford explorer. it was burnt orange in color with primer red on the right front side. a san francisco woman who said she was attacked and her poodle killed got her day in court today. kim ferguson says her poodle was attacked by an out of control mastiff. the owner of the mastiff was apologetic but ferguson says he lied about it being on a leash. >> teacher tonya cafner refused to leave. oakland school police then started making arrests.

action. a venica man faces life in prison for killing and torturing an 18-year-old martinez man. the body of eric dean was found in december of 2009 near martinez. a jury today found 32-year-old robert gardener guilty of murder and torture. two other men are awaiting trial for their roles in dean's death. gardener is scheduled to be sentenced next month. in news of the world tonight, in spain tens of thousands of people took part in a nationwide strike today against austerity measures. an -- in baghdad iraq hosted the annual arab league summit. but only eight heads of state attended. sunni leaders were not there. it's the first such meeting in

month in transport from an ibm facility in colorado to california. you may not think about it but almost every move you make on the internet is being tracked. maureen naylor reports on how one silican valley giant wants to change that. >> reporter: tracking what you search is a common practice now under scrutiny. while the government is investigating google's policy, yahoo today announced the launch of a do not track tool. >> i think yahoo is jumping in saying we're going to be proactive. >> reporter: yahoo is showing this example of how users will be able to request they won't be tracked. >> these firms all make their money by tracking you. so when anyone says we're going to put in place a do not track it probably means they have a

work. they're going to get the information another way. >> reporter: they have to go through web publishers such as yahoo and google and search engines. >> yahoo's announcement said, we will listen to the signals that you just contend through the software. >> reporter: yahoo will still use information. >> to try and say we're not tracking but we're still going to do all these other things on the side. might be a problem for consumers, might not. it's kind of hard to tell. >> reporter: hard to tell he says because it's unclear how a do not track tool would work and how many people would use it or even care. maureen naylor, ktvu channel 2 news. a startling new report on autism shows a child development disorder is more common than previously thought. an estimated one out of 88

children has autism. that's a 78% increase over the last decade. it's not known how much of the increase is due to common traffic rather than conditions. >> we're talking about exposures to toxins, things in the environment. >> with hopes of a cdc study on the cause of autism is expected next year. the cdc is checking factors such as taking anti depressants during pregnancy. researchers say they have found very low traces of mercury in the fog. they say it's possible the mercury is coming from the ocean. in live storm tracker two, picking up a few showers out there. mainly in the north bay.

we talked about that earlier in the 5:00 and 6:00. we do have reports of sprinkles out in the fairfax area as well. it's very light activity right now. as we head into the bay area weekend, the atmosphere is going to moisten up further. by saturday morning we're looking for rain in the bay area. saturday looks like a pretty wet day, especially the first half. today there's clouds, tomorrow there's clouds. tomorrow there continues to be a chance of a sprinkle in the north bay. not a bad day tomorrow. the temperature on the mild side. on the bay area weekend we have rain on saturday. sunday is the better day on the weekend. they're having all kinds of flood concerns in many of the rivers. for us we're on the southern end of that as that system moves in slowly, the clouds increase, the sprinkles increase and we're down here away from the dynamics. we could see a half inch of

rain to an inch of rain. that's saturday morning. so it stars friday night -- starts friday night late and works its way into saturday morning. these sprinkles are occurring, kind of like what we have outside right now. and then the afternoon commute looks dry. now we're going to expand into the long range forecast. let me change images and what you're going to see is a saturday event. the doors opening up now. here's saturday morning at 6:00 a.m. that's the real deal. atmosphere has climbed, this thing touches into the coast. showers will begin around 6:00 a.m. for many people the entire bay area is wet by 9:30 and 10:00. by 11:00, the fog is moving right over the bay area. scattered showers friday afternoon. it's going to be a break sometime near noontime and 5:00. scattered showers late in the day and sunday you see things clear out nicely and you get a pretty nice day of it. a winter watch goes into
